Dr. Anthony Chambers, PhD

Research Program Coordinator & Staff Therapist—The Family Institute at Northwestern University; Assistant Clinical Professor—Department of Psychology at Northwestern University

Dr. Chambers is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychology, Research Program Coordinator for The Family Institute and the Center for Applied Psychological and Family Studies, and a Staff Therapist at The Family Institute at Northwestern University.

Dr. Chambers received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Virginia. He completed his internship and post-doctoral clinical residency at Harvard Medical School & Massachusetts General Hospital, specializing in the treatment of couples. Dr. Chambers also completed a two-year post-graduate fellowship specializing in couples' therapy at The Family Institute at Northwestern University.

Dr. Chambers' clinical and research interests broadly focuses on mate selection and marriage. In addition to his extensive experience in conducting marital therapy, his clinical interests also include premarital counseling. Dr. Chambers has completed training and is an approved provider in two of the most comprehensive and well respected divorce-prevention/marriage enhancing programs in the world: PREP (Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program) and PREPARE/ENRICH.

Dr. Chambers is the recipient of numerous awards and is the author of several publications, grants, & presentations focused on couples' functioning and on young adults' professional development. He was the principal investigator for a National Institutes of Health funded study examining fathers' reported relationship satisfaction and its impact on the transition into fatherhood.

Currently, Dr. Chambers is one of the faculty members teaching an exciting, innovative course at Northwestern University entitled "Marriage 101". Marriage 101 is a course taught to undergraduates about mate selection and about the intricacies of committed, romantic relationships, especially marriage, with the ultimate goal of enhancing relationships and preventing problems. The goal of the course is to teach undergraduates the skills necessary have a healthy marriage. The course seeks to put preconceived notions about marriage into perspective, including the idea that perfect, argument-free relationships exist. The central task of marriage is the management of differences. Self-knowledge is a key component to successfully managing differences. Without it, people often blame their spouses for their own problems.

Dr. Chambers is also developing a program of research investigating the impact of mate selection on relationship development and functioning. He has a particular interest in understanding the unique factors that explain the disproportionately low marriage rate and high divorce rate among African American couples. In general, he seeks to understand the processes and conditions that form, sustain, and dissolve couples' relationships.

Dr. Chambers has made frequent appearances with the mass media about the challenges facing today's couples and their marriages. He is a regular guest on local, national, and international radio. He has had multiple television interview requests and has appeared in local newspapers and national magazines.
