Shira Gordon

Student, Barnard College

Shira Gordon studies political science and human rights at Barnard College.

During her junior year she studied abroad with the School for International Training in Mali and in Bolivia. She then spent six weeks doing research for her senior thesis on coca, human rights and policy changes in Bolivia.

Shira has been involved in Barnard's New York City Civic Engagement program and has volunteered in New Orleans and Honduras with her Hillel group during spring break. At New Trier High School she was the co-head of Interact* Club, which is sponsored by Rotary International.

In her spare time Shira enjoys dancing, photography, cooking and reading.

She believes that everyone, especially young people, should engage and participate in the world around them so that they can make changes and make their voices heard.

"Whatiwishyouknew.com is an important website because it does this, by encouraging youth to speak and adults to listen.''

* Interact stands for international action. It is a service and social club for young people, ages 14-18. The first Interact club was founded in 1962. Today there are more than 6,000 clubs in over 100 countries.
